The Science · File 02

We don't ask you to believe. We show you.

Shilajit isn't a trend — it's one of the most-studied compounds in Ayurvedic pharmacology. Here is the biochemistry behind what you feel, and the human trials that back it.

Two molecules do the work.

The clinical effect of purified shilajit comes down to two highly specific, biologically active compound classes.

The nutrient shuttle
01

Fulvic acid

A low-molecular-weight organic acid that chelates minerals and carries them across cell membranes — nature's delivery vehicle. Standardized to 60%+ in every batch.

02

Dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs)

Potent antioxidants that support the mitochondrial electron transport chain, helping protect the machinery that produces ATP — your cellular energy currency.

Naturally chelated trace minerals — iron, zinc, magnesium and more — in the bioavailable ionic form that supports immune function and recovery.

02 / Mechanism of action

How shilajit works in the body.

From the moment it enters your system, purified shilajit follows a four-stage cascade — ancient Ayurveda called it yogavahi, a carrier that amplifies whatever it's paired with. Modern pharmacology reads it like this.

Stage 01 · Uptake
Crosses into circulation
Fulvic acid's very low molecular weight lets it slip across the gut lining and enter the bloodstream largely intact — with little of the first-pass breakdown that degrades bulkier compounds.
Stage 02 · Delivery
Shuttles minerals into cells
As a natural chelator it binds trace minerals and ferries them across cell membranes into the cytoplasm — the yogavahi "carrier" action, now measured as a bioenhancer effect.
Stage 03 · Energy
Protects the mitochondria
Dibenzo-α-pyrones feed the electron transport chain and buffer oxidative stress, helping the mitochondria hold a steady ATP output under load.
Stage 04 · Adapt
Restores at tissue level
Over weeks the cascade supports hormonal balance, stamina and recovery — the rasayana rejuvenation the classical texts described, now traceable to cellular mechanisms.
Ayurvedic pharmacology

Rasayana, decoded.

For 3,000 years shilajit — shilajatu, "conqueror of mountains, destroyer of weakness" — was classified as a rasayana: a rejuvenative that restores vitality at the tissue level.

The classical texts described its actions in their own vocabulary. Every one now maps to a measurable biological mechanism.

Yogavahi
the carrier
Bioenhancer — raises the bioavailability of co-administered nutrients, confirmed in pharmacokinetic studies.
Rasayana
rejuvenator
Adaptogenic support for vitality, stamina and healthy aging at the cellular level.
Balya
strength-giving
Supports muscular strength and exercise recovery — mirrored in controlled human trials.
Medhya
intellect-nourishing
Fulvic acid investigated for neuroprotective and procognitive activity.
02 / Bioavailability

The absorption gap.

A supplement is only as good as what your body absorbs. Raw resin and capsules must survive stomach acid and be broken down before the actives reach circulation — a process that degrades much of the payload.

Liquid delivery keeps fulvic acid in its water-soluble state, enabling sublingual and liquid-dispersed uptake that reaches peak plasma faster.

02.5 / Form vs. speed

Not all shilajit reaches you.

The molecule is the same — the format decides how fast and how much of it actually gets into your blood. Solid forms have to be broken down first; a water-soluble liquid doesn't. Here's how the four common ways to take shilajit compare on time-to-onset.

01
Fastest
OJIV Liquid Drops
Sublingual / water-dispersed
Fulvic acid stays in its water-soluble state and skips the digestive breakdown solid forms depend on. Drop under the tongue or stir into water — actives disperse instantly for the fastest, most complete uptake.
15–30 min
Precise dropper dosing
02
Raw resin in water
Dissolve, then drink
Must fully dissolve before it can absorb — undissolved lumps pass through unused. Sticky, strong-tasting and near-impossible to dose by eye.
30–60 min
Guesswork by weight
03
Capsules
Swallow, then digest
The shell and packed powder must break down in stomach acid before any actives release — delaying and blunting the plasma peak. A fixed dose you can't fine-tune.
45–90 min
Fixed per capsule
04
Gummies
Chew, then digest
Sugar, gelatin and binders dilute the active load — the least shilajit per serving and the slowest climb to peak plasma of any format.
